The conditions for a honey to be organic
For a honey to be certified Organic, the beekeeper must indicate the location of his hives. This will make it possible to certify that the environment is within a radius of 3 km (average distance that the bees travel around their hive). The hives must be placed at a sufficient distance from all sources of pollution (urban centers, highways, industrial areas, garbage dumps ...). The beekeeper must also leave the hives with sufficient honey and pollen reserves to ensure the overwintering of the bees.
It is possible to artificially feed the bees when their survival is compromised by extreme weather, but they must be fed with organic honey exclusively.
The hives should consist mainly of materials that do not pose any risk of contamination to the honey or the environment. The treatment of hives with chemical wax is strictly forbidden.
All these measures make organic beekeeping very constraining but bring a quality label. Unfortunately, few beekeepers manage to obtain the organic certification which leads to a ratification of the product.
